The manager: leader, expert, coach or friend?

Management styles reflect changes in society. The manager’s role in our post-industrial, knowledge-driven society is very different to what it was in a purely industrial society. Even if the image of the manager, with his/her power and expertise, is still with us, we now expect a manager to be not only a leader and expert, but also a coach and powerhouse for his/her team.

Objectives

  • To get to know different management styles
  • To differentiate between, and understand, the manager’s different roles
  • To know which style to choose according to the situation and individual
  • To broaden the manager’s range of leadership tools
  • To feel more at ease in different managerial roles.

Content

  • Analyzing your own management style
  • Analyzing your attitudes and those of your team members
  • Confronting other management styles
  • Working with different management tools
  • Analyzing the needs and experience of your team members and organization
  • Making team members more aware of the manager’s role as a coach.

Methods

  • Role play
  • Self-reflection
  • Feedback
  • Exercises
  • Group discussions
  • Discussion of real-life situations
  • Lectures
  • Printed handouts.
